Know your cooking oils!

Do you know what you’re cooking with?
Only too often do we see commercials on TV and in magazines of the ideal cooking oil, the one that turns your piece of meat into a beautiful golden brown succulent piece one, the one that makes you look like the perfect chef, the one that makes you go yummmm.

The perfect chop
The perfect chop fried in the wrong oil!

I was one of those too, until I happened to read the back of this particular frying product and actually read the ingredients. Just for interest sake I looked at it, as I was wondering while I took it from the fridge to start cooking with, what it was actually made of? What is so different than the ordinary butter?

Ingredients: Palm oil? Soya oil? Palm kernel oil? Sunflower oil? Fats? Flavour enhancer, aroma and colourants? I have no doubts that the EU has “approved” these additives… on paper, in some scientific research “where no animals were hurt” in the process. As a matter of fact, I don’t have most of these ingredients in my kitchen! After reading the horror stories on palm oil just the other day, I couldn’t believe that I was about to cook, again, with this substance and feed it to my family.

As long as there is no improvement on the sustainable production of palm oil, we all should try to stay clear of it as much as we can. It’s crazy; you will find it in so many (processed) products these days!

Michael Pollan has a good story on eating wisely. Eating wiser would start with eliminating margarine and highly processed cooking oils. It’s better for you and your family and the environment!
I’m not one of those health freaks nor am I an eco-maniac, but I do want to take care of my family and the environment, changing over to natural butter is a step in the right direction!
